Florals 1 & 2
is an intensive full time professional training course in contemporary floristry. For all those who have been dreaming of working in the floral world our career course will prepare you for setting up your own wedding flower design business or to work as a contract florist.
Vicki Roycroft will share her personal “undone” floral philosophy and the skills she has gathered running a floral design business on Waiheke Island over the past 20 years. She - along with Zoe McIntosh, Roz Sainsbury and others from the Wildflower School family- will teach you how to create flowers in the latest styles for weddings- and also help you to develop your own unique floral philosophy and style.
Our course is suitable for all levels of experience- our students range from absolute floral novices to working florists who want to up-skill in current wedding design or to start working for themselves.
There will be a balance of theory and practice: students will learn the principles and elements of floral design; the history of flower arrangement and the importance of flora in our culture; current trends in working with blooms and foliage; and the business skills required to work in the floral design industry generally and in the world of wedding flower design specifically. They will also explore the links between floral design and the Arts, interior design and fashion.
Florals 1
In Florals 1 you will be provided with the skills and knowledge needed in becoming a floral designer. Practical and theoretical training will be given in flower care and knowledge, the principles and elements of floral design. We will visit Nourish Gardens and pick beautiful seasonal blooms from this small local Waiheke flower farm. Students will be given an introductory look at working in a florist shop- and you will also get to work on the prep and set up for a real wedding. This intensive course specialises in contemporary wedding flower design. We will learn how to create beautiful handmade bridal bouquets, flower crowns, corsages and buttonholes, table centres, wreaths and garlands in “undone” and other styles… and learning the business of consultation, planning, quotations and ordering for weddings. The highlight of Florals 1 is MOCK WEDDING week- where you get to plan the flowers for a “mock bride”- following the process from consultation, through preparing a mood board and a quote, ordering the flowers- and then creating a bouquet, ceremony arrangement and hair flowers to the brief. Our floral creations will then be photographed at a top Waiheke wedding venue
Florals 2
In Florals 2 you will work with a business mentor to start formulating a Business Plan- and learn about the importance of social media in business- looking at website templates and business Instagram accounts. Flora -wise we will be going BIG: you will learn how to design and. construct all the larger aspects of wedding flower design- large urn arrangements. arch decoration, and installations of all types. We will also explore- and be inspired by artists, fashion designers and interior designers who use flora in their works. In your final week you will design and create a large installation piece for a specific venue- which will be photographed for your portfolio.

Bridgette (UF 1 & 2 Spring 2020)
“Hey Vicki - I just wanted to thank you so much for the love and care that you put into every element of the Wildflower course.
Attending your course was quite honestly one of the best decisions I have ever made.
I am so excited for what the future has in store for me with flowers and am so grateful for everything you have taught me.
I can’t wait to get out into the world and to learn more. Best wishes Bridgette ”
(Bridgette went on to become the lead florist at The Workroom, WANAKA)
Gina ( UF 1 SPRING 2019)
“Hi Vicki - I can't believe it's been almost a year since the course! I have been thinking about it quite a bit lately and have such fond special memories. The Wildflower School helped me develop my own undone floral style and allowed me the resources and friendly environment to experiment and play. You are an incredible teacher, I truly appreciate your generosity, knowledge, positivity and carefree nature. The course was very well planned and gave us the opportunity to learn about many different aspects of floristry from the visit to the flower markets, Nourish Gardens to the mock wedding. I loved the practical nature of the course mixed with just the right amount of theory and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. Thanks so much to you, I have gained the confidence and knowledge to start my own business The Flower Vessel.
Since the course I have been practicing my skills and have done weekly flowers for my local cafe in Clevedon, a market in Ponsonby and I have my first wedding booked for later this year! That's all from me for now, would love to catch up next time I'm on the island! Love Gina xx”
Francene (UF 1 Autumn 2019)
“Hi Vicki - I totally loved your course and when I’m doing flowers I think now what would Vicki do in this situation:-) In Feb this year I did my first official wedding since the Wildflower course and everything worked really well . Totally an exciting fun experience armed with your knowledge…. wedding arch under the big tree top of the hill ; six flower walls inside reception room; bridal bouquets; button holes; table flowers; wedding entrance flowers; flower silk wraps for arms of mother and mother in-law; head pieces for bridal party -silk hand dyed ribbons made by me. Other exciting stuff has been a hydrangea cloud for a formal dinner party. Numerous orders for birthdays and just because presents. Also I’m growing a lot of my own flowers that go in with my flowers from wholesalers around my area . Future thoughts for my flower love is to secure some land to grow more flowers which we are currently seeking. Develop my flower head crowns for sale. Develop more of my own props for weddings that I can hire out . Make more hand dyed silk wraps…. Yours in flowers Francene - Lovestories with Flowers”
Renee from Jarden Bell (UF1 2017)
“Hey Vicki! As you know my business did really well after my workshops and then your course. My first season I managed a small amount of weddings but my second season gave me over 30! I also got my first target of a budget with 10k last year. The course gave me the confidence boost I needed and the skills we learnt were amazing. I’m very passionate about delivering gorgeous blooms and creations to my clients. With your course it made me look at all flowers differently. You need to have a point of difference to make it out there I feel. Don’t just copy other florists! I loved the touch of Nourish Gardens as it shows you can always grow some varieties for yourself that aren’t at the auction markets. Currently enjoying our little Eden, but looking forward to a small season ahead which I can do from home and it’s the ideal job with a little one. Renee (from Jardin Bell) xxx”
